The Surrey Board of Trade’s 2009 Annual Report was distributed at the meeting, and members were updated on the the Board's many activities promoting business in Surrey.

After reports from Staff and last year’s Board, the newly elected Directors and the new Executive Team took the oath of office, administered by Councillor Linda Hepner, standing for Mayor Diane Watts.

Steve Hall, General Manager of Bombardier’s Vancouver office provided an informative session on the need for, and developments in public transportation in our burgeoning cities around the world. The presentation highlighted some of the progress in Metro Vancouver and confirmed the transportation advocacy work done by Board of Trade staff in recent years.

Members also heard from the student entrepreneurs in the Youth Leaders of Today Mentorship Program. The program is a joint effort between the Surrey Board of Trade, Junior Achievement BC and a number of sponsor/mentors. During the last year, the students formed a company called YChange and dissolved it when the term was done. They distributed a product (t-shirts), paid their expenses, provided a return to shareholders, and made a profit which was donated to the Surrey Firefighters Charitable Association.

We may be facing some challenging economic times, but Surrey and the Surrey Board of Trade in particular are in good shape to lead business through to recovery. That much is evident from the enthusiasm and solid progress shown by members, staff and guests at the 2009 Annual General Meeting.
