TransLink Property Tax Increases an Acceptable Necessity
Nobody is happy to see new taxes, however the TransLink property tax increase announced yesterday has been received as an inevitable necessity if the people in the region want a modern functioning transit system.

The business community is pleased that the transit authority has recognized that it must look to residential, as well as the business property tax payers to contribute to the funding shortfall facing TransLink.

“I'm pleased that TransLink is spreading the tax burden across the residential as well as the business properties,” said Board of Trade President, Inde Sumal. "It indicates that the organization recognizes that the business community alone can no longer carry this burden on its own."

Some business operators have expressed a greater concern that Translink look beyond increased taxation, to innovative methods of creating funding.  TransLink has been given the authority to build a real estate portfolio which should be the basis for continuing funding.  They expressed feeling that both business and residential taxpayers can only tolerate so many hands in their pockets.
